Hardin’s bracelet

After We Collided

Hardin’s bracelet is a small but emotionally charged object that persists between Tessa Young and Hardin after their separation. Tessa wears it even as she tries to protect herself from reminders of him, while Hardin reads it as evidence that their bond may not be over. Its meaning lies in that difference: for Tessa it is an attachment she cannot remove, and for Hardin it becomes a reason to hope.

A Sign That Remains

At a dinner party at Christian Vance’s, Tessa puts Hardin’s bracelet on her wrist before leaving. She knows she should not be wearing it, but without it she feels incomplete; the bracelet has become part of her sense of herself, just as Hardin has. Her reflection places the object within the aftermath of the breakup: she is trying to build emotional protection, yet still carries something that connects her to him.

Tessa’s Attachment

Tessa’s choice is not presented as a declaration that the relationship is repaired. The bracelet remains with her even while she thinks of Hardin as someone who was part of her life. Its presence therefore holds two truths at once: she is attempting to move forward, but separation has not made the bond disappear. The object makes that unresolved attachment visible without resolving what she will choose.

Hardin’s Interpretation

Watching Tessa at the party, Hardin notices the bracelet and repeats to himself that she is still wearing it. He treats this as a good sign, taking the visible token of their past as possible evidence that she may still care for him. His hope is sharpened by his attention to Trevor, whose interest in Tessa makes Hardin jealous. The bracelet thus carries different meanings for the two of them: an intimate, difficult-to-abandon presence for Tessa, and a promise Hardin wants to find in her continued wearing of it.
